Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid Canada (MHFA) is a 12-hour training course delivered in 4 modules, carried out over 2 days. Participants will learn how to provide initial help to people who are showing signs of a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Mental Health First Aid Canada covers:

  • Explanations of mental health, mental illness and mental health problems

  • Signs and symptoms of common mental health problems and crisis situations

  • Information about effective interventions and treatments

  • Ways to access professional help

Why take MHFA Canada?

Mental Health First Aid shares the same overall purposes as traditional first aid – to save lives. It aims to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others

  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state

  • Promote the recovery of good mental health

  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem

The Facilitators

Charly Sinclair

Charly has worked for the Canadian Mental Health Association for 13 years, the last 3 with the Kelowna Branch. At CMHA Charly has been involved in systemic advocacy, consumer leadership, peer support and facilitating mental health information and education.

Amanda Swoboda

Amanda has worked for 10 years as a community mental health worker, primarily in residential settings. Amanda has a degree in Social Work and has been with the Canadian Mental Health Associations' Kelowna Branch for the past three years. At CMHA, Amanda has had the privilege of being involved in systemic advocacy, consumer leadership, facilitating mental health information and education to broad a community spectrum, mental health promotion and is currently providing community based coaching for an innovative guided self help program called Bounce Back.
